The department of general surgery, Xuanwu Hospital Capital Medical University, consists of ward of hepatobiliary surgery, ward of thyroid and breast surgery, ward of gastrointestinal and pancreatic surgery, ward of cancer comprehensive treatment, intensive care unit and day-care unit. There are 112 beds available.

The ward of hepatobiliary surgery, which is one of the earliest centers for laparoscopic surgery in China, mainly undertakes the diagnosis and treatment of liver, gallbladder and splenic diseases. It has formed a mature system of minimally invasive surgery in the treatment of gall stone, liver or bile duct carcinoma, hepatic benign tumor and splenic diseases. Among them, single hole laparoscopic cholecystectomy, laparoscopic cholecystectomy in day-care unit , laparoscopopy combined with choledochoscopy in the minimal invasive treatment of choledocholithiasis, laparoscopic hepatectomy, transcatheter embolization combined with operation in the treatment of huge hepatic hemangioma, TACE combined with radiofrequency ablation and operation in the treatment of primary liver cancer and laparoscopic splenectomy are all in the leading level in China. More than 1200 complicated operation were completed each year.

The ward of thyroid and breast surgery mainly treats breast and thyroid benign and malignant tumor and inguinal hernia, umbilical hernia, incisional hernia. Thyroid biopsy, breast biopsy and lymph node fine needle aspiration biopsy are routinely performed to improve the diagnostic accuracy of thyroid cancer and breast cancer. Meanwhile, a series of minimal invasive operations, such as minimally invasive thyroidectomy, One stage reconstruction or prosthesis implantation after radical mastectomy for breast cancer, are performed. These minimal invasive operations not only ensure the curative effect but also improve the quality of life after surgery.

The ward of gastrointestinal and pancreatic surgery has strong technical strength in the treatment of colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis and other gastrointestinal and pancreatic diseases. For the treatments of gastrointestinal and pancreatic malignant tumors, it establishes a comprehensive platform for tumor treatment including surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, intraoperative radiotherapy, interventional therapy, and radiofrequency ablation which treat a large number of patients with advanced gastrointestinal and pancreatic cancer every year. The pancreatic disease has always been the focus in this ward. The clinical Center for Acute Pancreatitis, Capital Medical University and the clinical center for Pancreatic Disease, Xuanwu Hospital have been established. These centers have rich experience in the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic diseases such as benign and malignant pancreatic tumor, acute pancreatitis and chronic pancreatitis, especially for the diagnosis and treatment of severe acute pancreatitis, which has always been the leading level of China.

The ward of cancer comprehensive treatment is mainly focus on chemotherapy of gastrointestinal tumor and breast cancer, comprehensive treatment, such as the target therapy, the interventional therapy, and the ablation treatment, for advanced tumor. More than 1800 cases are discharged every year.

The surgery intensive care unit (SICU) is responsible for the treatment of critical patients in the department of general surgery, including the evaluation and support of the perioperative organ function of the patients with major or high risk operations. It has reached the domestic leading level in various critical and postoperative care and postoperative monitoring.

Day-care unit is a kind of highly effective and quick surgical method which has been developed rapidly in recent years. At present, a series of day-care operations, such as cholecystectomy, inguinal hernia repair, breast benign tumor excision and operation of benign anorectal diseases, have been performed in the day-care ward. Day-care surgery can save the patient's precious time, reduces the cost of hospitalization, and also have the characteristics of high quality, safety and convenience. For these reason, it is becoming more and more accepted by patients.
